Happy New Year!

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! I hope that each and every one of you has a fantastic 2011! :)

I have had a wonderful Christmas--I'm sure likea all of you---have spent lots of time with my family, seen movies, eaten too much, stayed up way too late, and not gotten much rest, but is has been awesome!

7th grade exam grades will be shown on Wednesday 1/5. There were some really awesome grades! One person made over a 100....and they are in 5th hour. Congrats!

The first spiral of the nine weeks will go home Tuesday, January 11th.

Happy 2011 everyone! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone back at school on Wednesday!

Exam!

Hi everyone,

Way to go 7th graders! A little over half of the students that I teach came to help session today, I am so proud! I hope that it helped clear up a few more things for you.

Your exam is Friday morning, you will take it by section. Signs will be posted on the doors of the classroom. Please have a sharpened pencil and loose-leaf, I will have everyone's test folders. Remember, you must show your work either on the exam or loose-leaf AND it must be numbered. All final answers will be written on the answer sheet.

Good luck! I know you will do well. Please let me know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful Christmas!

Mrs. Serpas :)

Week of December 13th

Hi everyone,

What a cold and windy morning! Looks like a yucky day ahead. A great day to stay in and study. :)

I'm sorry the last week has been so crazy- Julia sick, test dates changing, computer issues/study guide key problems, you name it. We just have to make it all work!

6th grade: Ch. 5 Quiz (Sec. 1 - 4, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing fractions) is Tuesday, 12/14.  There will be only be a few division problems as we have just started that.

7th grade: Change in plans, again. Instead of posting study guide answers, I will give each student a copy of the (CORRECT) key in class on Monday. That will save us time, and we can get started reviewing.

Permission slips will go home tomorrow for the optional review session which will be Wednesday after your English exam. You may eat a quick snack/drink before we get started (you must provide this, I'm not!) if you would like. No food or drink in the media center.

Math exam is Friday morning. You will need sharpened pencils and looseleaf. That's it!

Have a wonderful week everyone!!!!

Mrs. Serpas

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

7th grade Math:

I will hold an OPTIONAL mid-term review session at school in the media center on Wednesday, December 15th from 10:15 - 11:15. Ms. Boudreaux has graciously agreed to help me with this. Students are dimissed at 10:05 Wednesday (immediately following their English exam). Students who wish to stay must submit a permission slip with parent contact information.

Pick-up will be at 11:15 in "big carpool" by the church office. If students need to be checked out earlier, please pick them up in the media center.

This session is not required in any way and is strictly optional. Students will work problems and ask questions. This is not a time to visit with friends and hang out. Any misbehaviors will result in a referral and the student will be sent to the office.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Slips will be sent home later this week.

Thank you!

Martin Morris (assisted by Matthew Morales) demonstrates a "reciprocal" or inverse of a number. Remember that any number times its reciprocal equals 1 ! This is very important in multiplication and divison of fractions and mixed numbers.

The number does a handstand. The reciprocal of 4/5 is 5/4. Get it? The number does a handstand! :)

Good job guys, thanks!

week of December 6th

Hello all,

We're almost there...keep up the hard work! Lots of into to give you today!

6th grade: I am so excited about the program we have started! My class will be visiting the website http://www.firstinmath.com/ to access math games. Each time they complete a game, they will be rewarded with (virtual) "stickers." I will require a certain amount of log-on time a week for a grade, but this will be a participation grade, not a grade based on results. It is my hope that students will have fun doing something different, and also brush up on some basic facts as we move along. We started this Friday, and by Monday students must complete the four basic operation tests (addition, subtration, multiplication and division). Most students completed at least two of these in the computer lab on Friday. They are welcome to do as much as they would like!

Each student was issued a username and password. I will have access to their times, stickers, etc. and everyone will be able to view the sticker count of the class.

If students do not have internet access at home, I will need a note stating this (signed by a parent).

Optional Ch. 4 retest is Wednesday 12/8. Students will be tested on same material and grades will be averaged. I need to know by Tuesday 12/7 who plans to take the test.

Ch. 5 Quiz (sections 1 - 4) is Friday 12/10. All students will take this.

7th grade:
Study Guide part I due Monday 12/6
Study Guide part II due Tuesday 12/7
Spiral 14 due Tuesday 12/7
Study Guide part III due Wednesday 12/8
Ch. 5 Quiz Wedensday 12/8
*Study Guide answers will be given Friday 12/10

Yes, a busy week! Hopefully you have been preparing for this and not waiting to do this all at once---I do realize you have other classes. :) Study guides went home before Thanksgiving!!

Have a wonderful week everyone! Please email me if you have any questions.

Week ahead

Hi everyone,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend! I enjoyed the beautiful weather and lots of family time this weekend--which means not much grading time. I do have 6th grade quizzes graded and will show students the grades today, but quizzes will not go home. 7th grade tests are not ready yet.

Looks like the Saints are back on track, and how bout dem Tigers! :)

6th grade- Spirals are due tomorrow. I apologize for not working problems first as I typically do, I took the problems from a workbook and two problems need to be changed. These are written on board in the classroom, and I will post that information to the site later today. Please make a note of those changes.

We will spend the next two days finishing up Chapter 3, then will move on to Chapter 4: Prime Factorization, Greatest Common Factor, etc. No quizzes or tests this week.

7th grade- Spiral due tomorrow. No quizzes or tests this week. We are also starting Chapter 4- Prime Factorization, GCF, LCM, etc. Most of this is a review, but this year we will tackle monomials as well.

Remember that help sessions are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Ms. Michael's room from 1:05-1:25. 7th graders need to see me first, then eat. 6th graders eat first, then ask duty teacher for a pass to see me in the classroom. You can stay as little or as long as you would like. A great time to ask questions about spirals, homework, test, etc. etc. Please come! Remember I am not at school in the mornings.

Have a great week everyone!

Fall clean-out

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder to clean out those binders! Anything we did first nine weeks may be recyled (6th graders) or put in your exam folder (7th graders). This inclues homework, notes, spirals, tests, etc.

Stock up on sharepened pencils, looseleaf (to keep in your binder) and make sure your math notebook is in your binder! Don't get a pink slip because you don't have your workbook, it should always stay in your binder.

I was out Monday because Julia has been sick, but I will see you today. Quizzes Thursday as scheduled!

Week ahead

Hello everyone,

GEAUX TIGERS! What a win! I hope the Saints will win as well today!!

Remember that conferences are being held this week. Wednesday- early dismissal at 12:30 (no busses!) due to conferences. Regular school day Thursday, no school Friday. If you cannot attend your scheduled conference, please email one of your child's teachers.

6th grade- Quiz Thursday 10/14 on 3.1 (Mean, Median, Mode, Range). Review sheets will go home Monday. Spiral 9 will go home this Tuesday, due Tuesday 10/19.

7th grade- Test Thursday 10/14 on 3.6 & 3.7 (Solving and graphing inequalities). Review sheets will go home Monday. Spiral 9 will go home this Tuesday, due Tuesday 10/19.

I will give out new ledger sheets this week. It is very important to keep these up-to-date. Students are given class-time to fill these out. Remember- you can do the calculataions at home if you run out of time, but there is always time in class to record the assignment, points earned, and points possible. It is important to record the assingment rather than just "hw" (for example, record "pg. 18 # 2 - 24 even").

All students will start off the nine weeks with a homework "freebie" which does not count on spirals. A student may use the freebie at any time of the nine weeks and will not receive points for that particular homework assignment. Any other missed homework after that will be recorded as a 0/3. One of my students suggested that I give a bonus point to students who have not used their freebie over the nine weeks- and I agree with this! New policy this nine weeks.

Spiral reminder- they are worth 5 points and are checked for accuracy, not completion as homeworks are checked. Per SAS handbook policy, 5 point or less assignments are not accepted late (unless student has an excused absence on that day). You may always turn in spirals early. If you are struggling to get these turned in on time, tell yourself they are due on Mondays (or better yet, Fridays!) to get them turned in on time.

This nine weeks I will begin deducting points for students who do not write their full first and last name and student number.

Remember- please get those spirals checked before you turn them in!

Have a wonderful week everyone, and let's go Saints!!

Test Date/Second Nine weeks

7th grade quiz covering 3.6 & 3.7 will be Thursday, October 14th. This is the day in between parent/teacher conferences (middle school).

Grade sheets are going home today. I cannot stress enough how important it is for students to complete homework assignments and do well on spirals! These grades have caused nine weeks averages for some students to go down despite higher test scores. In some cases these grades have raised nine week averages for students who have lower test scores.

Homework & spirals are super important! First nine weeks averages:

6th & 7th grade: 11 homework checks, 8 spirals, and 5 quizzes/tests.

19 grades that could have been 3/3 or 5/5. Get those completed and checked please!!!

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Week ahead

Hello all,

Sorry to post on Tuesday, our home internet was down yesterday (which did cause me a small amount of stress!).

We are just about done with the first nine weeks! Both grades have completed their last tests....and their last grade is due today (spiral).

We are taking a break from spirals this week- I think we can ALL use one! :) Next spiral will go home a week from today, Tues. 10/12 and is due Tues. 10/19.

I will send home grade verification slips when all grades are entered.

6th grade- We are starting Chapter 3 this week- data and statistics. Students will have a graded quiz (date TBA) on mean, median, mode (3. 1). We will cover the rest of sections in class and will not have a test on those, some in-class graded activities.

7th grade- We are moving on to solving and graphing inequalities. Quiz on those two sections (3.6 & 3.7) next week, date TBA. Then on to Chapter 4, fractions.

Great job first nine weeks everyone! Keep working hard.

As for weekend football---two wins---great. No further comments. :)

Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Serpas :)

The week ahead

Hello all,

I hope you had a great weekend! Win for the Tigers and....a really tough game for the Saints. :(

Distributive Property, etc.

Hello all,

6th grade had a quiz today --- decimal operations. I will get those back ASAP. We will continue in Chapter 2 with scientific notation and metric measurement.

7th grade---quizzes passed back yesterday (Wednesday) and must be signed and returned tomorrow (Friday). As a reminder---after I check for parent signature, tests may be kept by student. Test corrections are not due until Monday 9/21.

The grades were lower than I expected, and we will continue to work on distrbutive property until I think it is "clicking" some more with them. The students worked on a like terms worksheet today, ask them about the format.

Quiz a week from today, Thursday, 9/23. Information/review sheet will be sent home tomorrow.

I do not want your students (or their parents!) to get discouraged...they will get this material!

Have a great weekend, GEAUX TIGERS!

The week ahead

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great weekend!

6th grade: We are continuing in Chapter 2 (decimals) this week. Test Thursday on Ch. 2 Sections 1 - 4. Remember to check your spiral with a calculator, or have someone else check it before you turn it in. The spiral grades haven't been as high I as I would like to see! Spiral due Tuesday.

7th grade: I am still grading tests. I do not think they will be passed back Monday. We will continue Unit 2 this week, no quizzes or tests this week. This part of Unit 2 covers Chapter 3 sections 1 - 4: Solving one and two-step equations. Spiral due Tuesday.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Serpas

Test/Test Corrections

7th grade has a test Friday. One change on the test review sheet---format of properties is MATCHING (not multiple choice as stated on review sheet). All else is the same!

6th grade- All tests, regardless of grade, must be signed and returned by FRIDAY of this week. In order to recieve bonus credit for test corrections, make sure you rework EVERY missed problem (even those problems where students did not put units of measurement). Test corrections should be worked in pencil only, and should be stapled to the back of the test.

Labor Day week

Hi everyone,

I hope you have a wonderful three-day weekend! For those of you are staying home (like me) and want to get ahead...here's what is coming up this week.

Spiral 4 is due Wednesday instead of Tuesday this week. You will receive spiral 5 on Tuesday though, and we will back to the regular Tuesday due date the following week. Don't forget to get someone to check over your spiral!

6th grade: We will continue to work in Chapter 2- Decimals. Test a week from this Thursday, on 9/16, Ch. 2 Sections 1- 5.

7th grade: We are continuing in Unit 2. Quiz Friday 9/9 on first half- review sheets went home on Friday. We will spend more time on Distributive Property which is on the quiz!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Spirals!

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder about spirals. PLEASE check over spirals with your parents, sibling, tutor, a calculator, etc. This should be an "easy" grade...yet many people are not doing well on these. As a reminder, we review spirals in class before they go home, and the material covered can be found in the textbook.

Help yourself by doing well! :)

Tests, appointments, etc.

Hi everyone,

A note to 6th grade parents...if at all possible, please do not schedule appointments during 7th hour (2:35 through end of school). 6th grade enrichment meets from 10:25- 11:15, just FYI! I know that it is sometimes unavoidable to have to schedule appointments at that time, but if possible, please do so at another time. Thanks so much!

6th grade math test was moved to this Thursday, it will cover the same information.

7th grade Unit 2 Quiz is Friday, September 10th.

The week ahead

Hello everyone,

I hope you are having a great weekend!

Here is some info for the week ahead.

6th grade: Signed tests and test corrections (which are optional and will be counted as bonus points) are due tomorrow, Monday, August 30th at the beginning of class. You also had a homework assignment which is due tomorrow. Make sure you write the formulas with variables for each problem. You are responsible for knowing these formulas for your test which is this Wednesday: A = lw and P = 2l + 2w. You must use these formulas on the test. Review sheets will go home tomorrow, Chapter 1 test is this Wednesday, September 1st. We will start with Chapter 2, Decimals, after the test.

7th grade I am working on grading your tests---you did a great job! I'm so proud of you. I hope to have those back tomorrow or Tuesday. We are starting Unit 2 this week, and it also skips around. Unit 2 covers Equations and Properties. The first part is 1.5: Equations & Solutions, 1.6 Variables in Familar Formulas, 2.6 Number Properties, 2.7 Distributive Property. You will have a quiz on these sections after we cover them (date TBA). The second half of Unit 2 covers Chapter 3 sections 1 - 4, solving one-step equations and writing and solving two-step equations. Major unit test after we have finished all eight sections (date TBA).

Both grades spirals are due this Tuesday! Have a wonderful Sunday everyone, and see you tomorrow!

Test policy

Hello students and parents,

Just a few pieces of info about quizzes and tests. 7th grade will receive their integer quizzes today. Overall the grades were very good! Students will continue to receive spirals covering integers, and I will put a few integer problems on tests, but otherwise we are moving on. At this point in the year, 7th graders should be comfortable and confident about integer rules. If they are not, I will be happy to send home extra practice sheets.

*All quizzes and tests, regardless of grade, must be signed by a parent and returned to school in two days.
*After I have checked the test for parent signature, students will keep the tests. They are to use these for further study, extra practice, review with parents/tutors, and most importantly, saved for exams.
*7th grade quizzes must be signed/returned to school by Monday, August 23rd.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, August 12th

Hello everyone,

I hope the week has been a good one so far! The first week of school can be tiring (for teachers too!)...so much information comes your way. Hang in there, it's almost Friday!

Just a reminder that spirals were passed out Tuesday and are due the following Tuesday, August 17th. They are due at the beginning of class, don't plan on finishing up a last problem or two in class; spirals should be completed Monday night. If you finish your spiral before Tuesday, you are welcome to turn it in early! Make sure you write your first and last name on the spiral and include your math number.

6th grade: we are working in Chapter 1, describing patterns. Quiz sometime next week, date TBA.

7th grade: We are going to finish up integers this week (ch. 2) and will go back to Ch. 1 (Order of Operations). Unit 1 is in 3 chapters--Integers & Absolute Value (Ch. 2), Order of Operations (Ch. 1) and Scientific Notation (Ch.4). POP QUIZ early next week on operations with integers...addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 20 points! This is your warning!

If you have any questions, please let me know! You may email me any time lserpas@aloysius.org.

First week of school!

Hi everyone,

What a great first day of school! I hope that all of you are having a wonderful day so far. All of my math students should receive their take-home math textbook as well as their workbook. This textbook should not be brought back to school until May! Please keep it in a safe place (not accessible to younger siblings, pets, etc.). Your workbook should stay in the math section of your binder and needs to be brought to class every day.

6th grade: The summer packet that you received from Ms. Crawford in May will be due Friday, August 20th. For those few students who did not receive the packet, yours will be issued this week and will be due at the end of the first nine weeks. We are starting with Chapter 1! First spiral will go home tomorrow and is due the next Tuesday.

7th grade: We will start with integers which is in Ch. 2. First spiral will go home tomorrow and is due the next Tuesday.

I am looking forward to a wonderful school-year! Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Have a great week!

Summer is almost over!

Hi everyone,

I hope you have all had a great summer! I have had a wonderful summer and wish it wasn't going by so quickly....

I have been at school getting organized and ready to start the school-year. I will be teaching four classes this coming school-year, one 6th grade math and three 7th grade math classes. If you will be in my class for a second year...good news....same format! I will keep you and your family updated on this website, you will have homework (which will always be checked for a grade), weekly spirals, quizzes and tests. I will be available for help sessions during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Ms. Michael's room from 1:05- 1:30. Happy Mother's Day/Last post for 7th grade!

Hi everyone,

Happy Mother's Day to all of the wonderful mothers out there! I hope that you have a very special start to your day so far.

7th grade- the end is almost here! Exam is tomorrow morning. Make sure you have pencils, a working calculator (try it out at home first!) and a free reading book. I will provide you with scratch paper. If you finish the exam and have checked all of your answers before the end of the exam period, you will only be allowed to free read. If you do not finish before the end of the class period you will be allowed to continue working on your exam until you are finished.

I took the exam yesterday, it took me about 3o minutes but this did include some interruptions from my children! 58 questions on the exam, first page -- no calculator.

Please bring your home copy of your math book to school Monday or Tuesday. It needs to be stacked underneath the board in Ms. Stuckey's room or Ms. Mathis' room (wherever your math class is held). You will not receive your report card until all textbooks have been turned in.

Email me if you have any questions! Good luck, I know you are all well-prepared.

6th grade: last test is tomorrow! It will cover integers (five problems), one-step equations, rates and ratios. This is the last major grade of the nine weeks.

Bonus is due tomorrow, no exceptions!

End of the year test for all 6th graders will be held Tuesday morning. This is an important test, but will not count as a grade towards you nine weeks grades. Just do your best! We have not covered everything that is on the test, so skip what you don't know (or better yet---try it!).

Have a wonderful week everyone! Students---be sure to give your moms extra hugs today and let them know how much you appreciate them!! :)

First week of May!

Hi everyone,

Can you believe we made it to the first week of May? Seems like our first class in August was ages ago....I'm glad that we have made it to May. Hang in there a few more weeks everyone!

7th grade first---I know you are anxious about exams (or at least should be thinking about them!). We do have a very busy week, but not a moment will be wasted. Some due dates to keep in mind:
1.) Monday- Last spiral (!!!!!)
2.) Monday- Study guide Part I
3.) Monday- **test corrections and signed test
**Remember that for this test I will allow you to earn 1.5 points "back" for every 3 point question...this includes the volume questions.

Tuesday: Study Guide Part II

Wednesday: Study Guide Part III

*Monday through Wednesday will be spent on study guide review. Students will be able to work on their study guides Monday and Tuesday during class, and all answers will be given in class on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will also be study guide review. This is a time for students to ask questions about particular problems from the study guide and/or sections (example- percent proportion). Our math exam is the first exam...and will be held Monday morning May  10th. Students will need a calculator for this. All home copies of textbooks must be turned in during finals week as well.

I will hold an OPTIONAL review session for both of my 7th grade math classes on Friday after school. Students may bring a drink and snack, we will get started after school and students should be picked up promptly at 4:45 from middle school carpool. I will send home a permission slip tomorrow.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me!

6th grade: Test review tomorrow (Monday), and test Tuesday covering solving equations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). I will send home a practice test and key tomorrow. It is important to do your best on this test as it is one of the last major grades of the nine weeks.

Spirals were ready Friday though not all students received one (teacher/printer error!). They will be due this Friday. This is the last spiral of the nine weeks, make sure every answer is correct!

I have decided to give out a one-time bonus assignment. The work will go home tomorrow and is due FRIDAY, May 7th. Credit will be given for correct answers only (with work shown of course), I have not yet decided the maximum point value but it will most likely be in the five to ten point range. I will not accept bonus after this Friday, no exceptions.

Have a great week everyone!

Friday, April 16th

Hi everyone,

I hope that you have a great weekend planned! Just a few reminders about the upcoming weeks. Terra Nova testing will be Monday through Wednesday for 6th and 7th graders. Regular schedule will resume on Thursday, April 22nd.

6th grade- we are continuing work with one-step equations next week (Chapter 7). Next test will be TBA (will not be next week). Spiral due Friday, April 23rd.

7th grade-  LAST TEST of the nine weeks will be Monday, April 26th. The review sheet was passed out before Easter, please refer to it for more information. Test covers Chapter 7, sections 1-4 and 6 - 7. Impress me with your knowledge on this test! Spiral due Friday, April 23rd.

7th grade math exam will be Monday, May 10th. I will hold an optional  review session after school on Friday, May 7th until 4:45. More information will go out closer to that time.

Week of April 5th

Hi everyone,

I hope that you had a wonderful Easter break with your family! I had a great week off, it flew by.

We are really down to the grind now, progress reports go out next week! I was disappointed in the recent spiral grades in both 6th and 7th grade. Both of these spirals covered multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, and less than 7 people out of 92 students made a 5/5. Due to these poor grades, tomorrow's spiral will also cover this topic. I worked examples on the back of the spirals, and will do the same tomorrow. It is is crucial that students in each grade master this topic (many 7th graders made mistakes with their signs). If you are still struggling with this, please come see me at lunch, or after school, or ask someone else for help. Spirals will be due a week from tomorrow, on Tuesday, April 13th.

6th grade: test this Friday, a review sheet will be sent home tomorrow after the field trip. The week before break was a little crazy as I was out sick one day, and Friday's class was only 15 minutes due to alternate schedule and Stations of the Cross. This test will cover simplifying expressions and equations, using distributive property, and identifying parts of an expression. We have covered ALL sections that will be on the test. This is a big one, so start studying!

7th grade: test this Friday, review sheets went home before Easter break. A chapter test will be given a week from Friday, more information to come.

Terra Nova, standardized testing, will be given the week of April 19th on Monday through Wednesday. Please do your best to attend schools these days. Testing will be finished by 1:05 on these days, please make appointments after this time on those days. We will back on regular schedule by Thursday, April 22nd.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

Have a wonderful week!

Week of March 15th

Hello all,

What a beautiful weekend! I hope that everyone enjoyed it. I hope that the warmer weather is going to stick around for a while!

6th grade: Enjoy your field trip tomorrow. Your test is Tuesday and will cover Chapter 6 sections 1 - 4 (Integers, absolute value). Test review sheets went home last week. Make sure you know the integer rules backwards and forwards (the integer rules including examples are also listed on the back of the review sheet). Spirals will also go home on Tuesday, due the following Tuesday (3/23).

7th grade: Test Wednesday on Chapter 9 Sections 1-4. Spirals will also go home on Tuesday, due Tuesday 3/23.

Both classes: If you were disappointed in your third nine weeks grade, make sure you are doing your part. Are you completing all of your homework assignments? Turning in spirals AFTER having them checked over? Remember---no late credit on spirals, if you don't turn them in by the due date you will receive a zero. Are you working test corrections for bonus credit? And of course last but not least, are you being attentive in class, asking questions, and preparing for tests? If you feel like you are doing all of these things but are still not as successful as you would like to be, please talk to me so we can get a game plan together.

Have a great week, make it count!

7th grade we will start Chapter 9 (Real numbers and triangles) today; no tests this week.

Have a great week!

Week of March 1st

Hi everyone,

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather! I am so happy to see the sunshine today.

We have a busy week, and the last one of the third nine weeks! Make it count. This week only, I am giving out spirals tomorrow, Monday, and they will be due FRIDAY MARCH 5th. I must turn in grades by Monday of next week, so I will not be able to give the usual 7 days to work on them. I debated giving you one this week, but feel that many people could use the grade boost, so again, they are due Friday. You are welcome to turn them in early. If you are absent on Friday, I will not accept them late (you will just not receive a grade for the spiral).

6th grade--- we are continuing to work on integers this week, test Wednesday, March 3rd. You MUST memorize and apply the integer rules!!!

7th grade---we will work on a few more sections in Ch. 8 (Geometry) this week. No class Thursday because of our Avery Island field trip. Your spirals are due the next day however.

Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Serpas

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Updates:

6th grade test on Wednesday March 3rd: comparing, ordering integers, adding integers, subtracting integers.

7th grade test on Friday, February 26th: Ch. 8 Sections 1-4

No spirals this week!

Week of February 22nd

Hello all,

I hope you enjoyed the weekend. This is our first full school-week in three weeks, so let's make it a great one!

6th grade- Spiral due on Tuesday. No tests this week. Your "Mapping our Way through Geometry" poster is due at the beginning of class tomorrow. We will be working on integers this week, going back to Chapter 6. No quizzes or test this week. Quiz next week (hopefully on Wednesday 3/3) on first three sections of Chapter 6 (comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting integers). This will be the last major grade of the nine weeks, make it count!

7th grade- Spiral due on Tuesday. Test Friday on Chapter 8 Sections 1 -4. Review sheets will go home by Tuesday. Lots of figure names and vocabulary on this test (polygons and angles) so you might want to make notecards for these! This will most likely be the last major grade of the nine weeks, make it count!

Wednesday is Science Night, and a no homework night. I hope that you will all attend.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Serpas :)

Ash Wednesday

Hello all,

I hope you had a safe and fun Mardi Gras holiday!

I passed out spirals to both sections last week; they are due Tuesday, February 23rd (next week). As always spirals may be turned in early. No tests this week.

6th grade will be working on an in-class Geometry project that will be finished up Friday. Next week we will return to Chapter 6 to cover integers. It is CRUCIAL that students memorize and apply the integer rules.

7th grade we will begin Chapter 8 this week-angles and polygons. Test next week date TBA.

Have a great week!

Week of February 8th

Hi everyone,

Just a few notes about the upcoming week.

6th grade- Spiral due on Tuesday at the beginning of class. You have a test on this Wednesday, 2/10, on Ch. 4 Sections 1 - 4. Though it only covers four sections, there is a LOT of information and vocabulary in these sections, please refer to the gold study sheet that went home Friday for test information and format. This test will cover information from the previous test (including the same vocabulary words) but a greater emphasis will be placed on the last two sections. As of Friday we have covered all test information and Monday and Tuesday will be review days. Following the test, we will begin our project (which goes along with the poster board you brought) which will be done entirely in-class; this project will finish up our Geometry unit. We will then go back to Chapter 6 to start our integer unit.

7th grade- Spiral due on Tuesday at the beginning of class. Test Thursday 2/11 on Ch.7 Sections 1- 7. Please refer to the bright gold test review sheet that was passed out on Friday. We have two more sections to cover before the test, but started one of these sections on Friday. We will cover the rest of the information on Monday from section 6 and cover section 7 on Tuesday, Wednesday is a review day. This is a major test that will cover a lot of information! All students should have a calculator for this test. Any calculator is fine, scientific calculators are not necessary.

Both grades: to prepare for your tests, re-work homework problems, use the online book and tutorials, work odd problems from the book (and check your answers in the back of the book), make flashcards for vocabulary, etc.

I will pass out a new spiral one day this week that will be due Tuesday, February 23rd. I am allowing extra time for those of you who will be going out of town for Mardi Gras. As always, you may turn in spirals early. For those of you going out of town for Mardi Gras, I do not give out specific assignments in advance as they are always based on what we accomplish during class. You may turn in your spiral early if you would like. 6th grade will be finishing a project, and 7th grade will be working on an activity based on Chapter 7 so you should not have much to make up.

I will not be at school on Monday as I am going to Miami for the Super Bowl with my husband. I look forward to telling you about the trip when I return on Tuesday. Ms. Scafide will be your substitute on Monday and I have left plenty of test review work for you to do. I also left a list of names of people who received work deficiencies, if they are not turned in on Monday you will receive a referral. So get those signed and turned in!

Have a great week, and I will leave you with a last.....

One more thing!

We are continuing in Chapter 7 this week (7th grade) and Chapter 10 this week (6th grade).

February 1st

Hello all,

I hope that everyone had a nice weekend. Just a few reminders about the week ahead. Both 6th & 7th grade must turn in spirals tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2nd). Yes, this is retreat day, but they are due tomorrow (as originally scheduled). There will be classtime tomorrow after the retreat has ended. New spirals will be passed out tomorrow to both grades.

I do not yet have the next test date determined (for either grade), stay tuned for more information.

6th grade-your half-size white poster board is due TODAY! As of Friday, no one had turned these in. A note was sent home to parents about this last week as well as being on the website. If posters are not turned in today, work deficiencies will be sent home. You may turn them in by WEDNESDAY of this week, that is far as the extension will go. Work deficiencies will be due tomorrow.

A few thoughts about third nine weeks---traditionally grades seem to take a dip 3rd nine weeks. School fatigue, holiday let-down, increasingly hard material, all of these factor in. Please do your part to keep your grades up by turning in homework, spirals, and preparing for your tests. Several 7th graders seem to have been caught by surprise by the vocabulary that was on the last test....I said in class that these would be on the test, we reviewed these definitions daily, and the words were on the review sheet! Pay attention to the review sheets, I always take the time to make these for your benefit...no surprises on the test. :)

Please let me know if you have any questions! Parents and students are always welcome to email me, lserpas@aloysius.org.
